Last week at the 215th American Astronomical Society meeting, UCLA astronomers announced that they had found warm dust – evidence for the violent collision of rocky planets – around a star called HD 131488. The strange thing is, the composition of the dust has little in common with the composition of rocky bodies in any other known system.

"Typically, dust debris around other stars, or our own Sun, is of the olivine, pyroxene, or silica variety, minerals commonly found on Earth," said Dr. Carl Melis, who led the research as a graduate student at UCLA. “The material orbiting HD 131488 is not one of these dust types. We have yet to identify what species it is – it really appears to be a completely alien type of dust.”

With perennial foe Pakistan always teetering on the brink of political collapse and neighboring superpower China taking strides into space technology, India has announced that it is developing an exo-atmospheric "kill vehicle" that will knock enemy satellites out of orbit.

The program was proudly announced as part of India's ballistic missile defense program, a division of India's Ministry of Defense. However, in a briefing last week defense officials admitted lots of work on the project is yet to be done. Like, almost all of it. The kill vehicle (read: missile of some kind) will be guided by a laser, which will lock onto the offending satellite and keep the kill vehicle on a solid interception course. Neither the laser nor the kill vehicle actually exists yet, but be forewarned: India will put a dent in your space capabilities at a time and place as yet undetermined.

Of course, India isn't the first state to dabble in space-based defenses or satellite-slaying technologies. Ronald Reagan's Strategic Defense Initiative — the now infamous "Star Wars" — proposed to arm a series of ground- and space-based stations with interceptor missiles (for defensive purposes only, of course). In 2007 China brazenly launched a ground-based missile into the atmosphere to demonstrate its ability to destroy satellites, creating a mess of orbital debris when it blew apart an aging weather satellite. The U.S. also used a ship-based missile to incinerate one of its own spy satellites in 2008, as its decaying orbit was threatening to send it crashing down to Earth with toxic materials on board.

On January 20th, former astronaut Buzz Aldrin – who was the second man to walk on the Moon and has been a longtime advocate of space exploration – will turn 80 years old. Wouldn't you like to send him some birthday wishes? Well, you can! The Planetary Society is collecting birthday wishes to be put on a "ginormous card" honoring his 80th trip around the Sun. Originally, the card was to be presented at a ceremony where Stephen Hawking would also receive the Planetary Society's Cosmos Award, but Hawking has been advised by his doctors to refrain from flying to California for the event.

Space Shuttle Endeavour was rolled out to its seaside launch pad on(Jan. 6) at the Kennedy Space Center, officially starting the clock for the ‘Final Five’ flights. These five will close out the Space Shuttle era forever by the end of 2010 or early 2011 unless the program is extended for a few missions by President Obama.

I was totally thrilled to witness the trek first hand from just yards away as central Florida was gripped by a rare and truly ‘bone chilling’ cold snap. Endeavour was bolted atop the mobile launch platform (MLP) and hauled out to the pad at about 0.5 MPH by the giant crawler-transporter which dates back to the Apollo moon landing Era of the 1960’s. For many X-Wings in the Star Wars universe, the end came as a spectacular explosion on the field of battle. Not so much for this RCX-4 helicopter. For it, the end will no doubt arrive as a boring ol' lawsuit.

First spied at CES, hovering in the air and openly thumbing its nose at George Lucas and Lucasfilm, the RCX-4 is a four screw beast of an RC helicopter that bears more than just a passing resemblance to the workhorse of the Rebellion. And like Dak, Luke's enthusiastic but doomed gunner in The Empire Strikes Back, it too feels as though it could take on the whole Empire by itself, if not for that pesky IP issue that will surely bring it down very, very soon.

So its days are numberd, but even so this knockoff sounds decidedly un-knockoff in the quality department. Developer Digitronics promises easy flight thanks to an on board gyro and simple controls. The aluminum case is beefy. The asking price is steep. The chopper even has the ability to hover safely in place all by its lonesome, should you have to put the controller down to take receipt of a subpoena or something.

Takashi Murakami Exhibition @ The Palace of Versailles

The Palace of Versailles has invited leading Japanese artist Takashi Murakami for a two-month retrospective later this year. The exhibition, running from September 12th to December 12th, will be Murakami’s first major retrospective in France, following fellow pop artist Jeff Koons who showed at the palace in 2008 and Frenchman Xavier Veilhan in 2009. Murakami looks to display his sculptures and paintings in 15 rooms in the palace’s Hall of Mirrors and the apartments of the King and the Queen. Since controversy provoked by the Jeff Koons exhibition, the palace, a symbol of the system of absolute monarchy, is being careful to avoid displaying works with pornographic or morbid connotations that might offend some visitors.

With her brilliant literary fantasy novel Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, Susanna Clarke changed both fantasy writing and what was considered acceptable in literary circles. She took a novel scientific-historical approach to her story of two magicians who become involved in politics and warfare in England during the Napoleonic Wars. Fans have been waiting for a sequel to the novel for quite a while, and insiders at Clarke's publishing house says she's definitely under contract to write one - supposedly a sequel set in the Middle East and Asia - but there's no deadline for this author who might take up to 10 years to write a novel. Let's assume optimistically that she's already been working on it for a couple of years - that means sometime in the 'tens we'll get to plunge into another of Clarke's amazing tales of magic and geopolitical history.

Dazed Digital recently had a chance to chat with a couple of this generation’s most prolific Japanese streewear designers, in NIGO® of A BATHING APE® and Tetsu Nishiyama of WTAPS fame. Joining forces last year, both developed a new line from the BAPE franchise, entitled URSUS BAPE, which has garnered much attention moving into 2010. Amongst other topics, both designers chat about their collaborative work, fashion preferences, and collecting habits.

…How did you two first meet?

When I was 18 and Tetsu was 14. We met at a mutual friends house, just hanging out. No one really introduced us; we just kind ended up in the same place at the same time and got each other pretty much right away.

…So what is the inspiration behind Ursus?

Its kind of like Ursus is the B-side of Bathing Ape. It’s the darker half of it, the rougher, gruffer side.
The word Ursus itself is inspired by the gorilla General character from Planet of the Apes – General Ursus. As with BAPE we are taking that film partly as an analogy and Ursus is the sort of rough and nasty character from that film. I was also interested in the fact that ursus is also Latin for bear, which is a rugged and gruff animal, and fit’s with my designs.

So if you have been friends for that long what was it that made you want to collaborate on a project now?

It’s really only the first time we have worked together in an officially announced way. We have actually been working together unofficially since we first met. When I had my first store Nowhere, it was originally half Undercover’s store and half mine, and I sold Tetsu’s first brand in there. We also worked together on an exhibition of artists from the Mout crew, which included Tet. This is really just the first time we have phrased it this way.

With a new year comes new projects and opportunities, and today we are proud to announce a collaborative effort between Adapt, Hieroglyphics and Souls of Mischief. As fellow bay area natives, and with the great respect we have for the music they have been creating for decades, it made alot of sense for us to do a project together. A homage to one of the greatest hip hop songs PERIOD (check the Video if you need to be Educated), the 93 til' tee was a representation of a classic ideal that meshes well with our ideas of personal advancement and continuing into the future, wherever that may take us.

He peeled the top layer off our brains and eyeballs with scifi flicks Alien and Blade Runner, and then went on to make dramas without any spaceships or dystopian future cities in them. At last one of science fiction's greatest cinematic auteurs has pledged to make the 'tens the decade when he returns to the genre. He's got movie versions of Joe Haldeman's The Forever War and Aldous Huxley's Brave New World in the works, as well as a prequel to Alien. Knowing these films are coming from Scott is going to keep us on the edge of our (movie theater) seats for the next ten years.

You'd think that smartphones would have made traditional credit cards obsolete by now, but since they haven't (in the US, at least), Mophie's iPhone credit card reader may be the next best thing.

Its full details will be shared with us next week at CES, but the system will consist of a hardware scanner and a corresponding app. So while the iPhone's API restrictions will prevent you from scanning your card directly into Safari for your next web purchase, there are surely some remote pay possibilities in the works similar to what we've seen from Square—not to mention, it'll pave the way for an entire generation of even lazier credit card theft. If you could have only seen the look on Space's face..They told us it had been a line down the block all day..good thing they got there the last hour.They Closed store 15 people b4 them, space got pull @ Bape..so they sent fools home and still let The Space Station in so Space & Ellen could do a lil shopping..

I remember spending countless hours playing Lucasarts' X-Wing back in the day, painfully defending these Rebel frigates against TIE Fighters. Then I got TIE Fighter, and enjoyed destroying them. I wouldn't have the heart to reduce to bricks the enormous Nebulon-B.

The Lego version of the classic Nebulon-B Class rebel frigate Redemption is 4 feet and 6 inches long. That's 172 studs long, and I'm not talking about The Hoff. It's big enough to dock one mini-Millennium Falcon and three X-Wings. [MOC via Brothers Brick]

The current solar cycle (24) has been pretty boring, but a new sunspot — 1035 — is growing rapidly and now is seven times wider than Earth. Solar astronomers are predicting it could grow to be the largest sunspot of the year. There's not been a lot of competition for the biggest sunspot, though: for 259 days (or 74%) of 2009, the sun has been spotless. But maybe the (solar) tide is turning. There's been other action recently besides the new sunspot. A long-duration C4-class solar flare erupted this morning at 0120 UT from around the sunspot, which hurled a coronal mass ejection (CME) towards Earth. (See below for image of the CME that blasted off the sun on Dec. 14) Observers at high-latitude could see some aurora action when the CME arrives on or about Dec. 18th. Keep cheering; maybe the sun will come out of its doldrums.
